Transformers

Transformers is a massive movie franchise, based on the toys of the same name manufactured by Hasbro - a company formed in 1923 in the United States. Originally manufacturing school supplies such as pencil boxes, Hasbro first came to prominence in the 1950s, when it began making the famous Mr Potato Head toys.

Transformers

First launched by Hasbro in 1984, Transformers are living human-like robots who can seamlessly transform between vehicles and giant beasts. Their lives are chronicled in an epic story that spans an exciting universe, spawning five films, with another in production for release in 2018.

Early Years

The original toy line grabbed kids' attention from the start, as the robots changed into vehicles and back again with ease. The first Transformers were Bumblebee, Soundwave, Cliffjumper, Gears, Huffer, Wincharger and Brawn. Hasbro's earlier success in marketing its GI Joe toys with comics and cartoons was replicated with the Transformers.

Comic book writers Dennis O’Neil and Jim Shooter created the story of how Transformers were from the planet Cybertron, where there were two sides: the heroic Autobots versus the evil Decepticons. The Autobots protect earth against the Decepticons, who are trying to steal energy. Both sides can transform into regular earth vehicles to blend into their day-to-day surroundings.

Later, writer Bob Budiansky was drafted in to create names and individual personalities for the toys, writing most of the Transformers comic books. By September 1984, the first Transformers cartoon series was released. A further 13 episodes were commissioned and the cartoon was aired in syndication in December '84. The franchise continued to grow over the next two decades.

Transformers Films

The first live action film was released in 2007 after Hasbro teamed up with Paramount studios. The toys and cartoon characters transferred to the big screen for action-packed adventures, thanks to modern technology, which has created some amazing special effects.

The plot of the films remains true to the cartoons, with the Autobots battling the evil Decepticons to save the earth. The first film, called Transformers, grossed $709 million worldwide and starred Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox as the human heroes.

The franchise has gone from strength to strength: released in 2009, the second film, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen grossed $836.3 million worldwide and again starred LaBeouf and Fox. This was followed by Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2011, Transformers: Age of Extinction in 2014 and Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017. The highest-grossing Transformers film to date is Dark of the Moon, which took $1.124 billion worldwide at the box office.

New Movie

Already in the pipeline for 2018: Transformers franchise leader Tom Warner announced that Bumblebee was to be a spin-off film on the title character. It will star WWE wrestling legend-turned-actor John Cena. Bumblebee will be a prequel to the other Transformers movies, as it will be set in 1987.

Bumblebee

In a small California beach town, 17-year-old Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld) discovers the broken and battle-scarred Transformer Bumblebee who is hiding out in a junkyard disguised as a yellow VW Beetle car. To capture the Christmas market, the movie is scheduled for release on 21st December 2018.
