Snoopy: It’s a Dog’s Life!

Snoopy is an iconic beagle dog cartoon character from the comic strip Peanuts, the Peanuts movies and associated television series. Created by Charles M. Schulz, Snoopy first appeared in the cartoon strips on October 4, 1950, two days after the first cartoon strips were published - although he wasn't referred to by name until a month later.

The Peanuts comics and movies focus on the relationships between Snoopy and other characters, most notably Snoopy's owner, Charlie Brown. Interestingly, when the comics first came out, it wasn't clear who owned Snoopy, although after a while it became evident that Snoopy lived in the back yard at Charlie Brown's house, and his previous owner was called Lila. The famous beagle dog was originally going to be named Sniffy, before it emerged that this character already existed.

As one of the most recognisable cartoon characters of all time, Snoopy spends most of his time in or on his doghouse. He is best known for living in a fantasy world, where he conjures up make-believe roles of being an author, a student named Joe Cool or a war pilot. He can often be seen in the comic strips wearing a pilot's helmet, goggles and scarf.

Despite his imaginative tendencies, Snoopy is very loyal to his master Charlie Brown, even if he can't always remember his name and refers to him as the 'round-headed kid'. Although Snoopy is good-natured, funny and mostly happy, he can also be selfish, greedy and lazy. He has a penchant for cookies, root beer and pizza, and reads one word of the novel 'War and Peace' each day. He claims to be able to hear someone peeling a banana from far away. He dislikes cats, coconut candy, icicles dangling from his doghouse and balloons being squeezed.

Snoopy's thoughts appear in bubbles, although his moods are expressed through growls or laughter, for example.

Snoopy has seven siblings, and is best chums with a bird called Woodstock, who often sleeps on his nose. He is romantically linked to a dog called Fifi, who breaks his heart on more than one occasion. Snoopy often ends up quarrelling with Charlie Brown's best pal, Linus, although with good reason, as Snoopy often tries to steal the young boy's blanket. Sometimes, Lucy and Snoopy also come to blows, although they generally care for each other.

Snoopy has been ranked as the 8th greatest cartoon character of all time, and to commemorate his popularity, he has received a number of awards and honours. As well as bagging his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2015, he became the official mascot of the Apollo aerospace programme. Snoopy is also the mascot of Metlife, an American insurance company, and the 26th Squadron of the US Air Force Academy.

US bomber, the B-58 Hustler, has also been named after Snoopy, and astronauts who excel in their work may be lucky enough to earn the prestigious Silver Snoopy Award.
