REACH Compliance: Responsibilities of Different UK Industries

The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation & restriction of Chemicals or REACH is a European Union intended to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the possible risks of different chemicals used by various industries.

Chemicals are used daily, even in the manufacture of certain products. Some industries are required to inform consumers regarding the chemicals they produce and to make them aware of their responsibilities:

  • As required by the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (CLP), harmful chemicals must be labelled appropriately and hazards should be clearly communicated to workers and consumers in the EU.
  • Manufacturers and importers are required to pass on information regarding the properties of their chemicals. They should also comply with protective measures and restrictions.
  • Biocidal products such as those used in fibre, leather, rubber and polymerised material preservatives must be authorised under the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) or a national authority before placing them to the market. Moreover, the active substances in each biocidal product must have been previously approved.
  • Under REACH, chemical industries must provide all necessary information so that consumers can make informed decisions for their safe use.
