How to Install Rubber Matting on your Stairs

The stairs are commonly involved in slip and fall accidents – a single missed step can lead to serious injuries or even death.

One of the simplest ways to ensure maximum safety is to fit an effective rubber matting product to each stair tread… fortunately, this process is relatively easy!

You will need the following materials:

  • Rubber matting
  • Tape measure
  • Carpenter’s pencil
  • Straight metal edge
  • Utility knife
  • Heavy-duty adhesive
  • Hand roller

Let’s get started:

  • Ensure that your stairs are cleaned thoroughly – first sweep them and then mop them free of any grease or dirt; allow the stairs to dry before you begin with the installation.
  • Get the tape measure and start measuring each step – you can use a carpenter’s pencil to mark a guideline on the rubber matting.
  • Cut the rubber matting to size using a utility knife – use a straight metal edge to guide a cleaner cut.
  • Before you proceed, dry fit the rubber matting on the steps to make sure it fits well.
  • Apply the adhesive to the back of the rubber matting and spread evenly. Press firmly until the rubber matting is lying flush with the surface.
  • Use a hand roller to eliminate air pockets and wipe away any adhesive that might have seeped from under the matting.
  • Let the adhesive dry for several hours before allowing anyone to use the stairs.

Rubber matting is durable, resilient; it also offers excellent slip-resistance due its high traction! The natural qualities of rubber matting make it a great choice for added stair protection in any household or commercial setting.
