HOW TO GUIDE: Rubber Roofing Installation

One of the major advantages of rubber roofing is the easy installation – especially on flat roofs.

For those who find this task a daunting prospect, our step-by step guide will help you along the way!

What you’ll need:

  • Rubber sheets
  • Tape measure
  • Rubber adhesive
  • Edge trims

Procedure:

  • Sweep off any loose debris and check for sharp edges on the roof’s surface. Take your time with this, as any small obstruction can puncture the rubber sheets and create bumps that will spoil the overall finish.
  • Mop the surface and allow it to dry - trapped moisture can negatively affect the performance of your rubber roofing and can also stop the glue from adhering properly.
  • Measure the size of your roof as accurately as possible. It is a good idea to purchase rubber sheets in rolled form – since they have no seams – making them less prone to leaks and cracks.
  • Let the rubber sheets relax for a good 20 minutes. Unroll them gently and lay on a flat surface to allow the rubber to contract and expand into its neutral state.
  • Position the rubber sheets on the surface of your roof. Fold back half of the sheets and apply adhesive directly onto your roof’s deck. Wait until the adhesive turns tacky before adhering the rubber sheets in place. Follow the same procedure on the other half and sweep out any air bubbles with the use of a push broom.
  • Lastly, secure the edges by nailing in edge trims with the screws provided.
