Horse of the Year Show 2019

The annual Horse of the Year Show is a "champion of champions" event - when the cream of top international riders competes over five days' show jumping and showing classes at the prestigious NEC Birmingham Resorts World Arena.

This year's event is taking place from 2nd to 6th October and as always will attract a host of leading competitors across all the disciplines. Horse of the Year Show 2019 is the biggest week of the year for equestrian entertainment in the UK, and there will be something to entertain all the family.

Thrilling displays

Displays at this year’s show include the world-famous Lorenzo the Flying Frenchman and his thrilling exhibition riding, alongside fellow French performer Mélie Philippot, who will be showing her dancing duo, Diego and Quizas.

The adrenaline-filled Pony Club mounted games always go down a storm, while this year's Sunday evening gala showcases the racing heroes of our era, for the first time at the show. Meet Balthazar King, Big Bucks, Sprinter Sacre, Cue Card, Neptune Collonges and other racing greats - who have combined career winnings of more than £10 million!

Among the superstar riders competing this year will be Charlotte Dujardin, who won the Dressage Future Elite Championship at the Horse of The Year Show 2018 on Florentina VI. This time around, riding Mount St John Valencia, a mare described as a "star in the making", she will be hoping to win the title for the fourth year running, when she takes on the elite of the dressage world.

Special pony

Another competitor this year has a very different story. Rescued from neglect by the RSPCA as a two-year-old, this horse has qualified for the pony newcomers' final. Buster was rescued from a cruelty situation six years ago.

Darcy Foss read about him and decided to give him a wonderful home. They entered their first show jumping event in 2017 and haven't looked back since. Buster jumped new heights that he had never even achieved in training to qualify for the Horse of the Year Show 2019! Darcy is now looking forward to competing with her "amazing" pony.

Social event

As well as the "meet and greets" with horses and their riders, there will also be book signings - visitors can rub shoulders with some of their favourite riders!

There will be plenty of food and drink outlets for all tastes, spread across the site.

Show's history

The show began in 1949, after its founder, Captain Tony Collings, who also founded Badminton Horse Trials, decided there was a need for a special horse show as a celebration of the year. He believed it needed an indoor venue, as it was to be held in the autumn, so he travelled to Paris to see the famous indoor show, Le Jumping, for inspiration.

His idea received the backing of British Show Jumping Association chairman Colonel Mike Ansell and Colonel Vivian Dunbar Stanley Williams OBE. They accompanied Captain Collings to Paris to watch the show and returned to the UK to work out how they could create their own version.

First show

They came up with the idea for the Horse of the Year Show and it was launched in 1949, with Captain Collings doing most of the planning. The first venue was the greyhound arena in Harringay and there were 400 entrants for the show, which was a good turnout.

Over the years, the event has also been staged at Wembley Arena. It moved to its current home, Birmingham NEC, in 2002.

Today, the Horse of the Year Show is a national institution and this year will welcome 1,600 horses and ponies and 65,000 spectators. The Sunday evening gala performance will conclude with the emotive Ode to the Horse - the traditional finale to every Horse of the Year Show.
