As a high-performance elastomer, Viton® is a synthetic rubber product produced and trademarked by DuPont Performance Elastomers. This highly versatile material is ideally used in the production of gaskets due to its remarkable resistance to many factors, including harsh environments.
With a multitude of features and properties, Viton® is suitable for general industrial use.
Viton’s Main Grades
Varying from 66% to 70%, Viton® comes in four main grades:
- A (Dipolymers of VF2/HFP) - has a fluorine content of 66%
- B (Terpolymers of VF2/HFP/TFE) - with a fluorine content of 68%, it is commonly used for seals or gaskets
- F (Terpolyemers of VF2/HFP/TFE) - contains 70% fluorine and is typically used in oxygenated automotive fuels
- Specialty Types (such as GLT, GBLT, GFLT and Viton® Extreme) - these types are widely used in automotive and oil exploration applications
Characteristics and Properties
Viton® is ideal for many high exposure applications that are not achievable with other compounds:
Suitable for High Temperature Applications
Viton® can withstand a high temperature range of 204°C up to 315°C – with excellent heat and sunlight stability that helps it to retain its elasticity.
Resistance to Many Factors
The good thing about Viton® is its great resistance to many degrading factors that might otherwise cause wear and tear to other rubber products:
- Compression
- Oxygen and sunlight
- UV and weather
- Fungus and mould
- Minerals, silicone, oils, solvents and lubricants
- Inflammable hydraulic fuels and methanol fuels
- Chemicals, alkalis and aromatic hydrocarbons
Other Distinct Features
More than its resistance to environmental factors, Viton® also has:
- Good compression set
- Excellent mechanical properties
- Good electrical properties in low voltage and low frequency applications
- Low burning characteristics
- Low permeability
- Max elongation that can range up to 300%
- High tensile range
- ASTM D-2000 Classification: HK
Ideal Uses and Application
With outstanding stretch performance, Viton® is commonly used as an elastomer for various gasket materials, such as O-rings and seals, that are essential to many different industries. Since it can also resist heat, weathering and fuels, Viton® has also become a reliable material in heavy-duty applications in aerospace and engine systems. This elastomer is also a common sight in:
- Automotive manufacturing and seals
- Other transportation fuel applications
- Aerospace seals, pumps and valves
Viton® also has outstanding high resistance for applications with high exposure to chemicals, acids, oils and products at high temperatures – a quality that exceeds other compounds and that makes it fit for use in food industries, pharmaceuticals, petrochemical and other chemical industries.
