Ensuring Electrical Safety on Construction Sites

Construction plays a big part in the country’s economic growth. Not only does this industry provide our homes, it also creates a lot of employment opportunities, accounting for 2.1 million jobs or 6.2% of the UK’s total workforce as of 2015.

It’s common knowledge that construction is one of the most high-risk industries for employees. Out of the 4,251 work fatalities in 2014, 874 or 20.5% were construction orientated.

According to Occupational Safety & Health Administration, the top 4 causes of workplace fatalities are as follows:

Falls - 349 out of 874 were construction based deaths in 2014 (39.9%)
Electrocution - 74 (8.5%)
Struck by object - 73 (8.4%)
Caught-in/between - 12 (1.4%)

It is important to note that a lot of these accidents could have been avoided if only proper precautions had been observed.

Preventive Measures

Here are some simple practices and strategies that will help to reduce casualties in a construction setting:

Regular site inspections should be conducted

Site inspections will help detect errors and ensure that progress is being maintained.

Workers should always wear protective gear while onsite

Construction sites are prone to falling debris, exposed electrical wiring and unstable surfaces; for this reason, workers must always wear protective clothing including safety glasses, shoes, face shields, gloves and fire resistant coats, among others.

Set-up warnings and caution signs

One of the most obvious and effective ways to warn people about possible dangers is to put up caution signs around the area. Caution signs often come with general symbols that can be easily understood by the public.

Employees should work on a dry and insulated floor whenever possible

Electrical rubber mats provide extra protection, especially in confined spaces. They are recommended for their various beneficial uses.

Electrical Safety Matting Provides:

- Electrical resistance properties which make them an ideal insulator

- Cushioning for workers, preventing fatigue caused by standing for long hours

- Water and moisture resistance

- Fire retardant benefits

- Resistance to most oils and chemicals

- Durability

Coruba offers the most extensive and compliant range of Electrical Safety/Switchboard Matting in the UK. Grades offered are all classes of BS EN 61111 2009 , ASTM, BS 921 and VDE. For assistance, please call our hotline on 01702 560194.
