Dancing on Ice

Dancing on Ice is a modern TV phenomenon that has become incredibly popular with viewers of all ages and helped to extend the 'talent show' format of entertainment television. The concept sees celebrities challenging themselves in incredible ways to master the art of ice-skating. Viewers love following the stories of their challenges, successes and relationships as they compete to win over a panel of highly-regarded professional judges.

Back stronger than ever

The show took a break for a while but returned with a fresh new format, and now the 6pm Sunday slot is reserved for high-octane ice-skating glamour, colour, thrills, spills and excitement, with a real visual spectacle provided alongside the nail-biting excitement that is live dance-off shows.

This year will see series 10 return after its much-mourned break from our screens, with the legendary Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean returning as coaches and head judges, and Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby taking on the presenting roles once again.

Celebrity contestants

There have been some wonderful - and often surprising - celebrity guests on the show, who have demonstrated new and unexpected sides to themselves to an adoring fan base. In fact, there have been no less than 111 high-profile contestants from across the world of sport, entertainment, politics and other walks of life. Some of the most popular celebrities have included Emma Bunton, Angela Rippon, Louie Spence, Bonnie Langford, John Barrowman, Stephen Gately, Gareth Gates and a brief but memorable appearance from Pamela Anderson, who sadly suffered an injury and a wardrobe malfunction in the early stages of the competition! The late Keith Chegwin was also a very popular contestant, despite his brief first appearance on the show due to an injury. However, his great spirit and enthusiasm won him plenty of new fans - leading him to try again, undaunted, in a later series!

Some of the winners to date

After nail-biting performances in the previous series, some of the winners have included Coronation Street actress Gaynor Faye, former England rugby international Kyran Bracken, former pop star Suzanne Shaw, X-Factor runner-up Ray Quinn and Beth Tweddle the Olympic athlete.

The injuries we've witnessed

I think it’s fair to say, it’s not all sequins and glamour for the contestants, whose routines become more daring and spectacular every week. There have also been some nasty injuries too! Jennifer Ellison managed to cut her own scalp with a daring backward arch and leg kick combination and poor Keith Chegwin managed to break his shoulder and three ribs on the first day of training. Vanilla Ice also managed to cut his eye and David Seaman dropped his partner! Perhaps the most daring injury of all though was sustained by Bonnie Langford who was the only contestant to try the 'Headbanger' move - and indeed, she did get a bump on the head!

The universal appeal of the show

One of the great attractions of the show is that it is varied, family fun that inspires and entertains viewers and brings different generations together to cheer on their favourites. From children through to grandparents, everyone can come together for the experience!
