Industrial Ergonomics, Your Workplace and Fatigue

Extended hours of industrial labour can be draining! The intensive, action-packed days can lead to fatigue, which can have a serious impact on the business’ human resources.

The good news; this can now be reduced through the application of a proper industrial workplace setup – more commonly referred to as industrial ergonomics.

Industrial Ergonomics Defined

Ergonomics, as defined by the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, is the study that seeks to understand how a product, workplace or system can be designed to suit the people who need to use it. On the other hand, industrial ergonomics focuses on making the industrial workplace a more suitable environment for industrial work – helping to reduce musculoskeletal disorders and providing better comfort for increased productivity.

How Fatigue Breeds in your Industrial Workplace

In any manufacturing or industrial facility, standing on a flat surface for hours can be exhausting. Other factors can exasperate this, such as:

  • Ill-designed flooring – a poor workplace setup can intensify workforce fatigue
  • Use of hand power and tools – employees are exposed to a variety of tools that can be prone to dysfunction. This can be hazardous

The mere exposure to such an environment can lead to adverse effects which are detrimental to any business.

Reducing Work Fatigue through Industrial Ergonomics

While this can be a daunting task, there are some things you can do to reduce work fatigue:

Comfortable Workplace Layout

Choosing an efficient workplace layout increases productivity and makes employees more comfortable. When designing your workplace, you should make sure that you give due consideration to the following factors:

  • Good internal and natural lighting
  • Appropriate temperature control
  • Proper ventilation

Since much physical work is done while operating machinery, anti-fatigue matting is highly recommended to significantly reduce fatigue and to prevent work-related accidents.

Proper Posture

Your workplace should promote proper posture. The use of anti-fatigue matting allows the even distribution of weight and increases blood and oxygen circulation in the legs – promoting a more comfortable and less fatigue inducing posture.

Complete Workplace Equipment

Physical stress is as tiring as mental stress; and a lack of workplace equipment can cause a lot of physical and mental pressure. Providing your employees with the equipment and facilities they need can make all the difference to their day-to-day performance.

It is important to keep your environment work-friendly, as stress is quite often triggered in the workplace. Industrial ergonomics will help to create a more effective and productive work setting that prevents other factors from having a negative impact on the overall results.  For more information about anti-fatigue matting and other useful rubber products, please call 01702 811 623.
