Factors to Remember When Buying Anti-Fatigue Mats

Anti-fatigue rubber matting can provide comfort. According to a study carried out by Lucy Dorman and George Havenith from Loughborough University, rubber matting can help to reduce pain or stress to the legs and feet that is caused by standing for a long period of time. Anti-fatigue mats can also help prevent health problems such as rheumatism and arthritis. Here are some points to remember when buying anti-fatigue mats:

Firmness

A rubber mat that is too soft or too hard can cause stress to our legs. The ideal firmness of an anti-fatigue mat is 0.6 to 0.9m Mega Pascals (MPa). This pressure is enough to provide comfort to the legs and the feet.

Mats that are too hard can cause us to stand too rigidly. This can lead to blood clotting since our legs cannot move comfortably. On the other hand, instability or too much movement is likely when the mat is too soft. This can affect the over-all posture of our body. It may cause back pain and discomfort to the knees, ankles, hips and feet.

Ethylene Content

Using a proportion of ethylene content that can range from 45% to 85%, the higher the ethylene percentage of the rubber composition the harder the finished product.

Rubber should return rapidly to its original form once any weight has been shifted from one side to the other. The mat will not return to its original shape if there is not enough or if there is too much ethylene content.

Easy-to-clean Materials

A rubber mat is prone to dirt, especially if it has a domed, rough and uneven surface. Choose a rubber mat that is made from easy-to-clean materials, such as closed-cell foam. This material can also withstand general wear and tear. You can also choose anti-fatigue rubber mats that are manufactured from hypoallergenic materials to avoid unwanted odours and materials that are bacteriostatic and fungistatic to prevent infections caused by dirt or germs.

Durability

A durable rubber mat usually lasts for about 3 to 5 years, depending on the material used. Avoid using disposable rubber mats or those that only last for a few months. Check the edges of the rubber mat before purchasing. They should be as thick as the centre part of the mat. Keep in mind that rubber mats that break easily can cause accidents.
